Rock-cut basins are a natural phenomenon occurring in streams and river. These depressions are created by ‘Kolks’: powerful vortices within the water currents which spin small boulders around, eroding the rock with their abrasive action. (wikipedia).
Returning to their natal stream to spawn, both male and female salmon struggle against the hurling waterfalls, resting in basins as they strive to reach their chosen spawning bed. Truly their life span is one of awe and splendor, a treasured resource worth fighting for.
