In its 15th century heyday, this type of embroidery was created predominately by men (pyramid) Goldwork was a feature of wealth and pomp, embellishing garments and hangings, both in court and church. It declined, inexorably, over the next 600 years. The 20th century saw the beginnings of a renaissance, mostly at the hands of women embroiderers (sphere)……so it is A Fine Balance….
