The Joan Kielburg was Captain Andy Publicover’s largest schooner, at 177ft.  Bought in 1920, she was used mainly to sail the pulp trade, shipping bails under charter to the New Germany Pulp Mill.  She plied from Bridgewater, Nova Scotia to New Haven, Connecticut, returning from there or New York with cargos of hard coal bound for different Maritime ports.  Under command of another captain she was badly damaged in a 1929 storm off Cape Sable.  Re-rigged at great expense and put out to sea again she did not last more than a year…in 1930 a fire broke out in the engine room and destroyed most of her foredeck.  Her crew abandoned her (too early in Captain Andy’s mind) and the coast guard labeled her for salvage.
